The Guardian has this month reported that New Start has developed an insurance policy to cover the eventuality of non-payment of maintenance. The policy is designed to insure against non-payment of maintenance if the ex-spouse is made redundant, dies or falls ill. It also pays for legal representation to enforce maintenance if the former spouse deliberately and intentionally stops payments.
In the event that the insurance policy is provided at a reasonable cost this will be invaluable to women in ensuring they have a regular income into the future. Frequently women who receive maintenance cannot afford if that maintenance ceases to pay for legal fees to enforce an order providing for their payment of maintenance. The company who provides the insurance policy, Maintenance Assist, the director Henry Glasse has said “Our aim is to restore financial security to recipients of maintenance and we also provide a free legal helpline for support”.
Let’s hope that other insurance companies follow suit.
